Once our advocates have successfully completed 3 months service, they are enrolled onto a Level 4 City & Guilds in Independent Advocacy Practice.

Independent Advocacy is a vital role that helps people in services have a voice in the healthcare process
The successful candidate will deliver:
Independent Mental Health Advocacy: Providing a statutory service to qualifying individuals under the Mental Health Act 1983. You will help people to speak up and act for themselves. This can include listening and providing information and representing people’s views by speaking on their behalf. You may be asked to support people by attending Best Interests Meetings, Review Meetings, Hospital Manager’s Meetings, Mental Health Review Tribunals, Ward Round Meetings and Care Plan Approach meetings.
- Key duties:*
- Provide people with information about their rights
- Help people understand the information given to them and the options available
- When required liaise with key health care professionals on behalf of individuals when required
- Represent key meetings when required
- Delivering Advocacy Awareness training and other workshops when required
- Administrative duties include the completion of timesheets, case notes, monthly and quarterly reports
- Excellent listening and communication skills
- The ability to build good relationships
- Ability to work to deadlines and work independently
- Flexibility, reliability, and confidence when speaking with a range of people
- Experience and good working knowledge in Microsoft Office products
- Excellent report writing skills
- Knowledge and experience of supporting people with learning and communication difficulties
- An awareness of diversity and ability to research complex and sensitive issues independently and quickly
The successful candidate may be asked to provide:
University Student Advocacy Service: Empowering students to communicate independently and make informed decisions regarding their studies, finances, mental health, and other issues during their time at University. Student Advocacy involves promotional work by approaching students. Our advocates are expected to meet targets which are discussed and reflected on weekly, which include approaching and connecting with students, holding meaningful conversations with them.
Children and Young Persons Advocacy: Supporting children and young people in finding their voice and making sure their thoughts and opinions are heard by the adults around them.
Generic Advocacy: Working with people who may have difficulties being involved in decisions that may affect them, such as those with learning difficulties, physical health problems, mental health problems, acquired brain injury and dementia
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be carried out for this position
We expect applicants to be fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption, have an NHS COVID Pass or are willing to obtain the pass, as this is already a requirement at some of our visited sites and is likely to be all our visited sites by April 2022
A full valid driver’s license, and own your own car (due to the locations of service units and travel distance that may occur)
